The DC Council yesterday gave unanimous approval to emergency legislation aimed at ensuring funds are available to start construction on many waterfront development projects in Ward 6 and along the Anacostia. Councilmember Wells joined Councilmember Evans in introducing this legislation that authorizes the issuance of bonds by the Anacostia Waterfront Corporation (AWC) backed by DOT PILOT payments. The $140 million proceeds will be used to finance development projects at the Southwest Waterfront, Southeast Federal Center, Hill East Waterfront- Reservation 13, Poplar Point, Kingman and Heritage Islands. “The community has waited a long time for these initiatives to get started and this is an important step toward making good on the promises made,” said Councilmember Wells. He added, “The revitalization of our waterfront will provide jobs, affordable housing and much needed retail options and amenties. Failing to act now, before the dissolution of AWC takes place, would have created yet another delay for the communities waiting for these important actions.” |
