We always knew that Eastern Market was a local community center on the European model. Well now, Warner Brothers and Director Ridley Scott have found that it would make a great double for a market in Amsterdam and local residents, yes any and all of us, (even those with no previous experience) are invited to an open casting call for extras. The casting call will be held on Saturday August 18, 2007 from 9:00am - 6:00pm at 1754 H Street, NW Washington, DC and you will need to bring a non-returnable headshot or recent photograph. Filming is set to begin on Body of Lies at the Market on September 5, 2007.
The film is the William Monahan scripted adaptation of the David Ignatius novel in which Russell Crowe will play the manipulative CIA boss who teams up with operative Roger Ferris (Leonardo DiCaprio) to trap a dangerous Al Qaeda leader by planting a bogus rumor that the bomber is in league with the Americans. The Market will be seen on a normal day as vibrant and colorful with flower vendors and others plying their trade when suddenly there is a flash of light, sound and smoke to mimic an explosion in a car on 7th Street, SE in front of the Market. Two cars will be mechanically overturned in the street and extras placed nearby will give added realism. All special effects will be conducted in accordance with standards set by Fire Prevention Division, DC Fire Department. Most of the special effects however, will be incorporated into the scene using computer-generated images at the studio in Los Angeles. Director Ridley Scott and Warner Bros have collaborated on films in DC in the past including some work on Hannibal and GI Jane. You may also recall Warner Brothers’ films “Dave”, “JFK”, “The Exorcist” and “Pelican Brief” just to name a few in their long history of filming in DC.
Two days prior to filming, September 3rd and 4th, will be needed to create the effects of a Dutch market. The Warner Brothers production team will conduct their work during normal business hours and no businesses or vendors will need to be closed. The filming day has been carefully designed according to industry code of best practices in order to minimize any disruptions in daily life at the Market. Once filming is complete the Market will be restored to its pre-filming condition within 24 hours.
Neighbors will receive a hand-delivered letter prepared by the Office of Motion Picture & TV Development to inform them of the details of filming activities. For further information please feel free to contact Office of Motion Picture & TV Development 727.6608.

(1) Untitled 2007-08-22 04:57:19 I would hope that Tommy Wells, the City Council, and the Mayor would use this opportunity of this film being shot at Eastern Market to get a financial donation or fund raising event from the production company to support the rebuilding of Eastern Market and the displaced vendors.
Thanks (2) Untitled 2007-08-23 15:02:48 I don't know, maybe we neighbors could have gotten a "Body of Lies" T-Shirt or something when we lost our parking spaces for three days as indicated in the "hand-delivered letter". (3) Untitled 2007-08-27 17:54:17 We neighbors should use this as an opportunity to direct attention to the continuing appalling trash conditions behind the market. |
