On Friday, April 6, 2007, Councilmember Tommy Wells announced the creation of a new Transportation Task Force for Southwest and Near Southeast DC.

Mr. Wells stated, “After reviewing several plans regarding transportation planning projects in the near Southeast and Southwest neighborhoods of the District, I have decided to begin hosting a quarterly meeting of our transportation, development and community partners to ensure that a regional and long-term planning process is underway.”

The goal will not be to duplicate any current work, nor will it be to supplant any current planning in progress. Rather, the goal is to supplement these energies and bring critical partners around the table on a periodic basis to create an ongoing conversation about the vision and planning of transportation concerns and efforts for the entire near Southeast and Southwest neighborhoods – including not only the new ballpark, but also the impact of thousands of new residents and employees, at least two bridge construction projects, several large development projects, new public transportation routes, and more – planned over the next 10 to 15 years.

“I’m concerned about the big picture here. There are a lot of folks working hard to plan for Opening Day 2008, but there’s more than baseball coming to these neighborhoods. Almost 10,000 new federal employees, thousands of new residents, and many more visitors are on their way with the Southwest waterfront redevelopment and construction along M Street, SE,” added Mr. Wells. “To create livable and walkable communities, we need to think about new ways to move residents and commuters in and out of the area, from their homes and offices, not just the ballpark.”

Representatives from the DC and federal government and agencies, Advisory Neighborhood Commissions, local Business Improvement Districts, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton’s office, and many of the area’s developers have been invited to participate.

The Task Force will hold its first meeting on Tuesday, April 10th and will meet every two to three months to share plans, review progress, identify problems and build toward a shared vision of transportation plans and needs for the area.
