On Thursday, April 19, 2007, Councilmember Tommy Wells will lead a Community Walk Through in parts of the ANC6A, H Street neighborhood -- specifically in the alleys behind the 1200 and 1300 blocks of H Street, NE. MPD 1st District Commander Diane Groomes and representatives from the Mayor's Office on Neighborhood Services will also join the walk. The Walk Through – focusing on public safety concerns and hazards – will begin at 6:30 pm at the corner of 14th and G Street, NE and end at 7:30 pm. “Over the last several months, I've put together a series of Community Walk Throughs - in Southwest, Northeast, Southeast - where we put a focus on highlighting public safety concerns and working with DC agencies to address problems. The need for this walk was brought to a head with the recent sexual assault that occurred in the 1300 block alley between G and H Street, NE,” commented Mr. Wells. "I hope residents in this neighborhood will join us for this very important event." Councilmember Wells would like to encourage everyone who wants to protest the recent sexual assault that occurred in this neighborhood to join the walk. The walk will begin at Checkers with some discussion on the progress of the investigation and will continue down the 1300 block of G St, to the alley between G and H Streets. This first portion of the walk may be in silence, or may include singing or chanting, depending on how the walkers decide to express their feelings and show their support for community vigilance and awareness. The April 19th Walk Through will begin at 14th and G Streets, NE, walk west on G Street to the alley of 1300 H Street. The walk will continue east on H Street to the alley between 1200 Linden and H to 12th Street, walk south on 12th Street, and return on the alley between Maryland Avenue and G Street to 13th Street. The walk will continue south to the intersection of Emerald and 14th Streets. The walk will terminate at the Checkers at 14th and G. |
