Camp Unity

The School Resource Officers of the School Safety Division have partnered with the Stanton Park Neighborhood Association (S.P.N.A.) in order to offer Camp Unity, a summer camp for children who demonstrate the potential to become involved in criminal mischief.  The camp is only for children of the 1st District, which is more or less Ward 6, and between the ages of 5 and 12 years old.

The goal of Camp Unity is to aid in the development of children in our area through experiences that will encourage good citizenship and self-respect.  Campers participate in discussions on anger management, conflict resolution, communication, goal setting, cultural sensitivity, decision-making, self-image, juvenile law and career exploration.  Field trips, daily exercise and academic enrichment are also part of the rewarding summer program.

Camp Unity runs from June 24th to August 11th at Ludlow-Taylor Elementary School.  A portion of Camp Unity’s operating budget is subsidized, but the actual cost is about $500.00 per camper.

The Catholic University of America Summer Sessions: 2007 Pre-College Programs

Experiences in Architexture

Program is Designed for Rising Juniors and Seniors
First Session: June 18 -July 6, 2007
Second Session: July 9 -July 27, 2007
Director: David Shove-Brown, AIA

Make Washington, D.C. your living laboratory for experience, observation and critical analysis in the field of architecture!

The Experiences in Architecture program at The Catholic University of America is an intense three-week workshop for students interested in architecture. Students are exposed to both the academic and the professional sides of the architecture arena, as the city of Washington, D.C. becomes their classroom. Students will have the opportunity to visit architecture firms of various sizes, from large international firms such as RTKL and Ellerbe Becket that design office buildings, commercial centers and airports to midsize and small firms such as A2 Design and Travis Price, Architects, which design churches, community centers and custom homes.
Students will also tour construction sites in order to meet people involved in the building industry. Lectures and films on the profession explore subjects such as landscape design, urban design, history and theory. Students have the opportunity to hear renowned national and international architects speak about the current movements and explorations occurring in architectural design and building technologies.

Participants work along side full-time architecture students, participants receive individual instruction, group critiques and hands-on design projects. The workshop culminates in the presentation of student projects utilizing both architectural drawings and models. Students who successfully complete the program receive a certificate from The Catholic University of America’s School of Architecture and Planning. Projects that are generated may be used for application to architecture school.

Students who participate in the workshop are better prepared for the rigors of architecture school and outperform their peers. Classes will be held from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday. However, students will be expected to continue designing for several hours into the evening and on weekends and should plan their schedules accordingly. There are no specific prerequisites for the program as students receive ample instruction and guidance.

University room and board (19 meals/week) is available for the three-week program for $1,349. While campus housing is not mandatory, participants are encouraged to stay on campus to take full advantage of the program. A Resident Assistant staff supervises students housed on campus.

Tuition 2007: $1,399 includes all workshop supplies, not room and/or board. Application forms must be accompanied by a $100 non-refundable deposit (make checks payable to The Catholic University of America). A limited number of partial tuition scholarships are available for qualified students.

Forensic Anthropology

For High School Students
July 16–July 27, 2007
Director: David T Clark, PhD

Human skeletal remains have much to tell us about how people lived and died. Forensic Anthropology is the study of human skeletal remains in order to reconstruct the events of death. Archaeologists and biological anthropologists scientifically investigate human remains and related physical evidence to determine causes and circumstances surrounding human death and facts about human activities. Trauma, violence, disease, nutrition, and longevity are a few common types of evidence revealed by human skeletal studies.

This workshop will study archaeological/biological and anthropological methods used to investigate and document human remains and their associated archaeological sites. Students will study all aspects of the human skeleton, and learn how forensic scientists determine, analyze and interpret clues from sites associated with human remains. Ideas will be reinforced though daily hands-on, interactive projects. Examples of human remains, sites and methods will be exhibited through a variety visual media: slides, DVD, movies, etc. Students will conduct daily internet projects related to the study of forensic sciences. Class information will be augmented by field trips to forensic exhibits and local research facilities. Limited financial aid available for qualified students.  Please contact Summer Sessions below for an additional application.

Tuition-$950                             Room & Board-$825

Lion Drummers World Percussion Seminar

For students in grades 4–12
July 23–July 27, 2007
Director: Luis Garay

The Seminar will be in the Ward building in John Paul Hall and the percussion room 221.
Want to be part of a dynamic performing ensemble? Excitement, energy, and inspiration are the soul of this program. There is plenty of opportunity for individual creativity and spontaneity enthusiastically provided by master instructor, Luis Garay. He helps his students appreciate the passion and inspiration of the drum and experience the joy of rhythm and the fun of creating music through Afro-Latin Rock, Jazz and African World percussion.

The seminar is open to students from grades 4 through 12 and college students who play a percussion instrument. The seminar is looking for enthusiastic, young drummers and percussion players who have talent and potential, both those who are preparing for a career as professional musicians as well as those students who love to play drums or percussion instruments for fun and enrichment. Participants will improve their percussion skills through this fun and exciting week of percussion. In this exhilarating class, everyone will get to play in the groove, progressing from basics to more sophisticated rhythms, and finally to ensemble literature as they learn to converse in the "universal language" of music. There will be three performing ensembles according to the student's level and age.

Group I: Dragon Drummers for Elementary School (gr. 4–6): drummers or percussionists with two or more years of experience playing the instrument.  Monday–Thursday from 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m., Friday, July 27, dress rehearsal at 9:00 a.m., concert on Friday, July 27, 2007 at 7:30 p.m.

Group II: Tiger Drummers for Middle School (gr. 7–8): drummers or percussionists with three or more years of experience playing the instrument. Monday-Thursday from 12:15–3:15 p.m., Friday, July 27, dress rehearsal at 9:00 a.m., concert on Friday, July 27, 2007 at 7:30 p.m.

Group III: Lion Drummers for High School (gr. 9–12): drummers or percussionists with three years or more of experience playing the instrument, Monday–Thursday from 3:30–6:30 p.m., Friday, July 27, dress rehearsal at 9 am, and concert on Friday July 27, 2007 at 7:30 p.m.

Each class is different and challenging and all music is especially composed and arranged by Luis Garay according to the abilities of the students. This exciting “Week of Percussion” concludes with a spirited, high-energy concert showcasing the skills acquired by each of the classes. Each class will have nine students. Tuition 2007:  $225
