On Monday, April 30th at 3:00 pm, Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells will hold a meeting with displaced Eastern Market vendors to begin working out options to find alternate locations for their businesses. The meeting will take place at Tunnicliff’s Tavern, 222 7th Street, SE. “Today’s fire is a tremendous loss for our community and I am heartbroken,” Councilmember Wells commented. “I am committed that we will rebuild Eastern Market. In the days to follow, I will be putting together a working group with the Mayor to bring the government’s resources together to act as quickly as we can. But right now, we have an immediate challenge to help our small businesses and vendors find a way to stay open and survive until the Market is rebuilt.” “This morning - even as the building smolders and officials assess the damage - it's time to consider how to restore this critical community landmark and the businesses and customers it has served for more than a century,” added Mr. Wells. “I will have no higher priority than working with the Mayor, Council, Ward 6 residents and businesses to quickly find the resources and approaches to bring Eastern Market back. We all rely on the market: the small businesses that occupy it; the vendors who fill its surrounding streets and sidewalks every weekend; and all Capitol Hill businesses and residents. It's not just a vibrant commercial anchor. It's a vital source of community solidarity and pride.” Councilmember Wells is using his website, www.TommyWells.org, and blog as a way to keep residents and community members informed about the details of the fire and next steps. The blog has also created a place for neighbors to post and share their thoughts and memories of Eastern Market. |
