On Tuesday, May 1st, Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells introduced emergency legislation to approve a $1.9 million contract to replace deteriorated, opaque, fogged and broken windows at Payne Elementary School. Council approved the measure unanimously. “For nearly 4 years, funding has been available replace the windows at Payne Elementary School. Many of the windows are cracked, fogged over, and altogether contribute to a very bad learning environment for our children,” commented Mr. Wells. The contract was submitted for Council approval and will include replacement of all windows with new insulated windows with security screens. The windows will be able to be opened and closed by school personnel and are also insulated to save on energy costs. “It is imperative that we move forward quickly on these repairs so that the replacement of the windows can start as soon as possible and another school year does not begin without this needed improvement for the school. After four years of frustration and broken promises, the Council finally has the ability to deliver – and I don’t want to delay it one more day,” added Mr. Wells. |
