Despite the fire that was raging little more than 48 hours ago, the Capitol Hill community (and frankly, the entire city) has rallied around Eastern Market and the commitment to rebuild the market is unquestioned. In a strong show of support for our neighbors, and for the vendors and merchants that have served this community for so long, I am very happy to announce that the 44th Annual Market Day to support Friendship House will be taking place this Sunday, May 6th. There will be a short program at 1:00 pm, but the market will be alive and buzzing with activity. We are continuing to research temporary location plans for the displaced indoor vendors, but please be sure to share the news that Eastern Market is open for business this weekend. I will continue to keep updated information on Eastern Market and the rebuilding efforts on my website, and I am touched by the outpouring of support, the memories shared, and the helpful suggestions that people have either posted on my blog or emailed to me and my staff. I encourage everyone to come out on both Saturday and Sunday to help support Eastern Market and our vendors. I will be there and look forward to seeing you all this weekend for Market Day 2007!
